Beargrease To Start In Two Harbors Over Duluth's Lack Of Snow
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- A lack of snow in Duluth means the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will start outside Two Harbors for the second year in a row.
Organizers say the race up the North Shore of Lake Superior and back will begin Sunday, Jan. 31, at a scenic spot, gravel pit near Highway 2, just north of Two Harbors, rather than Duluth East High School. But the 383-mile race isn't being shortened much because it now extends up to Grand Portage.
The marathon is still expected to finish at Billy's Bar in Duluth around Wednesday, Feb. 3.
This will be the 32nd running of the Beargrease. The marathon is named for John Beargrease, an Ojibwe Indian from Beaver Bay who delivered mail along the North Shore from 1879 to 1899 by dogsled.
