State Patrol: 2 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured In Hubbard Co. Head-On Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two teenagers are dead after a head-on crash in Hubbard County Wednesday night, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities responded to the crash on Highway 71 at about 6:23 p.m. The State Patrol said 16-year-old Jacob R. Bruns, of Laporte, was heading southbound on Highway 71, lost control and was broadsided by a truck driving northbound. Three people were involved in the crash.

Bruns and his passenger, 16-year-old Kiara M. Renollette, of Bemidji, were killed. The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Shannon J. Jay, of Park Rapids, was seriously injured.

"Our school community is deeply saddened by this tragic news and we send our condolences to their families," Bemidji Area Schools superintendent James Hess said. "We ask parents to contact their children's school if they are experiencing distress to ensure we are able to provide appropriate assistance as needed."

Bemidji High School had social workers, psychologists and counselors on hand for students on Thursday.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Kiara's funeral and family expenses.
