'Making A Murderer' Lawyer Addresses MN Lawmakers On Justice Reform

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Wisconsin attorney who has a prominent role in a Netflix documentary is in Minnesota to talk prison reform.

Dean Strang shot into the national spotlight thanks to the uber-popular series "Making A Murderer."

He was part of the defense team for Steven Avery, who was convicted in the death of Teresa Halbach in 2005.

Addressing members of the Minnesota House on Wednesday, Strang said the value of the documentary was to raise questions about the criminal justice system.

He said policymakers should consider the rules that are currently in place and discuss what changes could be made to ensure fair police investigations and trials.

Strang would like to see law enforcement internally go back and review cases after the fact, similar to the case analyzing hospitals do after critical incidents involving doctors or patients.

Strang said he doesn't believe a bipartisan discussion on criminal justice reform will happen in Wisconsin, where he is currently practicing law.
