Wander Minnesota: Ice Sculptures At The St. Paul Winter Carnival

Winter has been all over the place this year, but one aspect holds steady: the St. Paul Winter Carnival, which runs through this weekend.

One of the many fun things to do is visit Rice Park and see the entries in the Ice Sculpture competition. It is always astonishing what these talented ice workers can create, and the range of feelings they can inspire.

While the first place winner was sobering, the second place artisan carving (2) is much more jovial: a cat faced with the temptation of a fish bowl.

First place in the professional category (3) is a child on a swing, getting some help from mom. It doesn't get much sweeter than that.

And of course, someone had to bring "Star Wars" in, and won second place in the multi-block category (6).

The sculptures will be on display through the weekend (barring severe melting).
