'Super Plungers' Take 24-Hour Frigid Dip In Rochester
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A group of "Super Plungers" in Rochester have been braving the cold and diving into an icy lake all night long.
Sounds crazy right? But it is an annual tradition to kick off the city's Polar Plunge.
The group will jump into the water 24 times in 24 hours.
They will take their final plunge during the opening ceremony of the polar plunge Saturday at 1 p.m.
One of the plungers, John Johnson of Algona, has been doing this for four years. He says a real bond has been formed between all the Super Plungers.
"The group that does it here is a wonderful group of people," Johnson said. "There's eight people this year, a number of other years it's been nine. And the plungers are, they're family now. It's a lot of fun."
The Polar Plunge in Rochester raised more than $200,000 last year for Special Olympics Minnesota.
About $180,000 has been raised so far this year, and the hope is to break last year's record.
