Grand Marais Pumps The Brakes On Dollar General Store

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Lake Superior community of Grand Marais has put the brakes on a potential move by a national discount retailer to move into the scenic tourist town.

Residents crowded into meetings and an online petition gathered more than 1,500 signatures amid reports that Dollar General was looking at land along Highway 61 that visitors would see driving into town.

The city council last week put a temporary moratorium on commercial developments larger than 5,000 square feet in that area. Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux tells the Star Tribune of Minneapolis it gives the city up to a year to study the issue.

Petition organizer Lisa Gergets says people aren't against Dollar General specifically, but worry about the impact on local stores and the image it would give to tourists.
