Group Rallies Through St. Paul During Crashed Ice

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- A group calling themselves Native Lives Matter rallied through St. Paul on Saturday in response to a grand jury decision to clear a Twin Cities police officer in the deadly shooting of a man with a mental illness.

Phillip Quinn was shot and killed by police in St. Paul in September. Police say Quinn charged at the officer with a screwdriver before he was shot.

The 30-year-old suffered from schizophrenia. He had been treated at the hospital for mental health problems six days before the shooting.

Protesters met at Indian Mounds Park and they had planned to walk to Crashed Ice downtown. Police stopped the group before they could reach the event.

A group registered with the Minnesota Secretary of State's office says the group that rallied in St. Paul is not affiliated with them, and that they have approached the group before to get them to stop using their name.
