After Spike In Heroin Deaths, Authorities Search For Source

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – State officials are warning the public about heroin circulating in the northern part of the state that is connected with multiple overdoses and seven recent deaths.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Office of Justice Programs released a statement Wednesday, saying that the heroin now moving in communities around Hibbing, Virginia, Bemidji, and Detroit Lakes may be laced with other narcotics or dangerously potent.

"Whether the drugs are coming from a single, particularly potent batch of heroin or from different sources, these drugs are lethal," said BCA Special Agent Sue Burggraf.

Officials say they are working with multiple agencies to find the source of the drugs.

They also emphasized the recent spike in deadly overdoses is part of a state-wide problem of opiate abuse.
