Mike's Mix: Kentucky Son

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Every Saturday, Mike Augustyniak finds the best mixologists in town to see what they're stirring up. This week, he heads to Parlour to try a Kentucky-style whiskey sour.

Kentucky Son

  • 2 oz Makers Mark
  • ¾ oz Cappelletti
  • ½ oz Earl Giles Lemon Cordial
  • ½ oz Earl Giles Maple/Brown Syrup
  • ¼ oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

Combine all ingredients and shake over ice to combine. Strain into a chilled stemmed glass, and garnish with an expressed lemon peel. To find the maple brown syrup and lemon cordial, visit www.earlgiles.com.

Taste Test

The recipe for the Kentucky Son came together after a trip that barman Jesse Held took to Kentucky whiskey country.  The drink was designed after a traditional whiskey sour, where 'sour' connotes a combination of spirit, lemon juice, and simple syrup.  The Kentucky Son uses a combination of maple syrup (in season now!) and brown sugar to replace the basic simple syrup, creating a deep, rich, caramel flavor that perfectly offsets the rounded bourbon flavor.  This is a drink that challenges you to even notice the 2 oz of bourbon it contains, since it goes down so smoothly.

Parlour can be found underneath Borough in Minneapolis's North Loop neighborhood.
