UMD Beats Defending NCAA Champion In Double Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Karson Kuhlman scored at 57 seconds of the second overtime to give Minnesota-Duluth a 2-1 victory over defending NCAA champion Providence on Friday night in the Northeast Regional semifinals.

Kuhlman controlled defenseman Willie Raskob's shot at the top of the crease and redirected the puck behind goaloe Nick Ellis before shoving it over the goal line.

The Bulldogs (19-16-5) will face Boston College on Saturday night for a spot in the Frozen Four in Tampa, Florida. Boston College beat Harvard 4-1 in the second semifinal.

Minnesota-Duluth's Tony Cameranesi opened the scoring at 3:18 of the third, and Steven McParland tied for Providence (27-7-4) at 7:22. Cameranesi also assisted on the winning goal.

"This was the kind of game we expected," Duluth coach Scott Sandelin said. "Both teams traded chances and both goalies played well. Sometimes it's unfortunate that someone has to lose those types of games because it was a really good hockey game.

"For our group, that kind of the way things have been the last couple of months. We've battled through some adversity and we've just kind of stuck to it. I think our guys did another great job tonight. We found a way to win at the end now we get to keep on playing."

Kasimir Kaskisuo made 36 saves for Minnesota-Duluth.

"Games like this bring out the best in you," Kaskisuo said. "You know the other goalie is not going to give up any easy ones and so you have to raise your own level to match that. The big thing in overtime is to just stick to your own game, try not to think too much and stay calm and confident."

Ellis stopped 54 shots for Providence.

"We just really struggled keeping it simple tonight," Friars coach Nate Leaman said. "Hats off to them. They took advantage of it."
