Sen. Franken Meets With Obama's SCOTUS Nominee

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Sen.Al Franken had his turn to meet face-to-face with President Barack Obama's pick for the next U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Judge Merrick Garland is on Capitol Hill this week for another round of meetings with senators. Garland met with Franken and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Wednesday.

Franken said Garland has received bipartisan praise for making strong consensus decisions and he believes Garland is an exceptional candidate for the Supreme Court.

"I said I want someone who, after we have the hearings, the American people go, 'I'd like nine of those,'" Franken said.

On Tuesday he met with a Republican for the first time, Illinois Senator Mark Kirk who is the first to break from his party by agreeing to the meeting. The GOP leadership believes it should be left to the next president to fill the vacant seat.

Judge Garland is scheduled to meet with at least two other Republicans.
