Jordana's Blog: The Women's League For Conservative Judaism
On Monday I spoke at the Women's League for Conservative Judaism's Spring Conference. At least 100 women from Winnipeg to Texas, leaders in their respective temples, were there to learn more about how to build stronger communities. I loved it.
They asked me to speak about my career and how I balance my faith, family and work (hint: I don't, it's smoke and mirrors). One of the stories I tell when I speak is about a Jewish woman who approached me at the Minnesota State Fair a few years ago and said, "I love you, but do you think you should be SO Jewish on the air? I worry about you being so public."
She meant to protect me and I thanked her for that, but her comment solidified the fact that I must be open about my faith on the air, because knowledge trumps fear and hate, and when you take away fear and hate, we can move forward as a society. If I can be a small part of that, I'm in!
After my comments at the conference this morning I took questions. One woman said, "Jordana, I'm so proud of you, thank you for the way you talk about Israel and Judaism on the radio."
Standing behind the podium I teared up. I don't do my job for praise, but I was so grateful for her support.
I do receive anti-Semitic comments sometimes, but I also receive supportive ones. I'm grateful to be able to reach both kinds of listeners and keep chipping away at the fear and hate.
