Mpls. Officers Who Shot Stabbing Suspect ID'd

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials have identified the two Minneapolis police officers involved in a shooting earlier this week that left a 50-year-old man dead.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the Monday morning shooting on Minnehaha Avenue, said Officers Eric Mulmberg and David Robins fatally shot Raul Marquez Heraldes after seeing him stabbing someone in an apartment bathroom.

Officials say the shooting happened after the officers were called to an apartment building before sunrise on a report of a man with a weapon. Officers found Marquez Heraldes in the building's foyer with a knife.

Marquez Heraldes, of Minneapolis, lunged at the officers before going into an apartment, officials said. The officers followed him and found that he'd locked himself in the apartment bathroom.

As the officers tried to talk with Marquez Heraldes through the door, they could hear the screams of someone else inside.

The officers then forced entry into the bathroom and saw Marquez Heraldes stabbing another man, identified as 63-year-old Robert Coleman. The officers then opened fire, striking Marquez Heraldes multiple times.

After being shot, Marquez Heraldes struggled with the officers, injuring Robins.

Marquez Heraldes was eventually restrained and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died, the BCA said.

Coleman, the stabbing victim, was brought to North Memorial Medical Center, where he is still recovering.

The BCA says Robins has been an officer in Minneapolis for two years. Mulmberg has worked in the city for three years.

The shooting remains under investigation. Once complete, the BCA will send its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office for review.
