Minnesota United Host Last Home Opener Before Joining MLS

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's the beginning of the end. Minnesota United's last home opener in Blaine -- their last home opener in the North American Soccer League -- before moving in to Major League Soccer next season.

For new Loons like Ben Speas, they're about to find out what a home crowd in Minnesota is like.

"I've heard a lot. I've never been to a game, so I'm excited to experience it for the first time. I know there's a lot of great fans and should be exciting," Speas said.

Saturday doubles as the first home opener for new coach Carl Craig. He's been an assistant the last six seasons, but now that Manny Lagos is in the front office, it's the first time Craig will be commanding the sideline.

"It's not about me. It is absolutely not about me, it's about these lads. And the people come to watch them play football, not to hear me talk and me opinions," said Craig. "So whilst it's a massive honor for me, all of my energy is going towards them and focused on winning."

The expectation of winning is certainly there. This isn't your typical NASL team. The Loons overhauled their roster this offseason to gear up for MLS, and a lot of the players here now are here for that purpose. It's a level of talent that hasn't been here in years past.

"Manny's done a great job in assembling this squad. And I think certainly as a Minnesota fan, this is probably the most experienced squad that's been in front of them ever," Craig said. "And because of that I think they should be excited."
