Boy Falls Under Train In North Minneapolis, Loses Leg

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- An 11-year-old boy is in the hospital after a train ran over him and severed his leg.

The incident happened near 44th and Bryant Avenues North on Saturday afternoon as the train was heading through north Minneapolis.

Police say the boy and two friends were trying to hop on and off the slow-moving freight train. That's when the boy slipped and went under the train.

Police were already on their way because concerned neighbors had called about the boys playing on the train. Residents say something needs to be done to keep kids away from the railroad tracks in that area.

"I see it all summer. They be running over there trying to beat that train," Nicole Coleman said. "It's so open over there, so wide open. They need to do something about that."

There has not been an update on the child's condition.
