Prince Led The Way: 5 Best Artists From Minnesota

Prince was the most successful and most recognizable artist to come from Minnesota, but there have been others.

Here are the top five artists from the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

5. The Replacements

Formed in Minneapolis in 1979, The Replacements are considered by some as the pioneers of alternative rock. The original group was together until 1986, producing four studio albums before lead guitarist Bob Stinson left and was replaced by Slim Dunlap. The group would stay together until 1991 before breaking up, only to be reunited for some events in 2006 then 2012-15. Their top hits are "Color Me Impressed" and "Bastards of Young".

4. Andrews Sisters

The Andrews Sisters came and went with a 42 year career long before The Replacements were even formed, showing how long ago The Andrews Sisters had their heyday. But in that heyday, which began back in 1925, they were a huge swing and boogie-woogie harmony group that came from Minnesota. Their top hits include "Boogie  Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" and "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree".

3. Judy Garland

Judy Garland was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1922 and was a musician as well as an actress, most famous for her role in The Wizard of Oz. Garland was primarily singing in the 1950s after her acting career had seemingly stopped and before her tragic death of an accidental overdose in 1969 at the age of 47.

2. Bob Dylan

The man who takes a close second place to Prince is Bob Dylan, the influential singer-songwriter. Dylan was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. Dylan has been depicted in high regard by President Barack Obama, who said "There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music." His most famous songs are "Like a Rolling Stone" and "The Times Are a-Changin'".

1. Prince

Number one is Prince, who enjoyed a brilliant career before passing away at the age of 57. He was born in Minneapolis and he died about 30 miles west of the city in his Paisley Park mansion. Prince was an innovator, and challenged social norms. As a performer, he was second to none on stage. The musician has a litany of hits to pick from, but his top two could be comprised of "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry", both of which are impossible to be found on YouTube.
