Celebration Planned At Site Of Prince's Former School

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- If you've been trying to figure out how to help honor Prince's legacy, a large family-friendly celebration is planned in his honor Saturday and the organizers say they would love some help.

They need food, snacks and 300 volunteers for an event they hope will inspire.

Cindy Booker is the executive director of the Sabathani Community Center in south Minneapolis.

"We were very fortunate to have Prince live in this community and attend junior high school," said Booker.

Now Prince's old school where he shot hoops is a community center in a neighborhood full of his fans.

"We wanted to make sure we we had something for the community that was family-oriented and that everyone would come to," Booker said.

So Cindy teamed up with a talk show host from KMOJ, the station that first played Prince's music.

"For me the music is the relationship and I'm grieving the loss of the creator of that music," said LaDonna Redmond.

So she's helping organize a family-friendly celebration of life right outside the Sabathani Community Center. Unlike the First Avenue parties, it will be a daytime celebration, with snacks and face painting, but there will still be plenty of dancing.

"People playing live music and will also be some of those classic songs from Prince and it will be bumping. It will be as loud as it can be," said Redmond.

The goal, she says, is to plant a dream in honor of a man who lived his.

"If we can inspire another young person to live their dreams, I think this will be the perfect way to celebrate the life of Prince," she said.

They're expecting big crowds similar to First Avenue -- 5,000 to 7,000 people -- and they need help. They're looking for musicians to perform, water, snacks and money. The stage alone will cost over $3,000.

The free party will be this Saturday from 1-8 p.m. at the Sabathani Community Center.
