Events Set To Honor Prince's Life And Legacy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- From block parties to concerts, plans are in the making for events this weekend and all the way into June to celebrate the life of Prince.

The pilgrimages, picture-taking and offerings continue at Minneapolis' First Avenue six days after his death, as well as in Uptown at the Prince tribute mural on West 26th Street and Hennepin Avenue.

And Northeast residents are organizing the Northeast Loves Prince Dance Party at East Side Neighborhood Services, which is set for Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"We have a DJ coming, DJ Trey," said Mary Ostapenko-Anstett, of ESNS. "Right now [we're] looking at doing this event outdoors. If weather doesn't permit, we certainly have the space inside."

It will be a family-friendly, alcohol-free event, and parents are encouraged to bring the kiddos along.

"It's kind of interesting that they want a place to be able to celebrate Prince's life and introduce that generation of young people to all the great things that he brought to us," Ostapenko-Anstett said.

Plans are also in the making for another family-friendly event in south Minneapolis. The Prince Block Party will be right outside his old school where he shot hoops. It has since been converted to the Sabathani Center. The block party kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday and ends at 8 p.m.

"We were very fortunate to have Prince live in this community and attend junior high school," said Cindy Booker, co-organizer of the block party.

Booker and Ladonna Redmond teamed up with a host from the radio station that first played Prince's music -- 89.9 KMOJ.

"For me, the music is the relationship, and I'm grieving the loss of the creator of that music," Redmond said.

They are still looking for volunteers and donations, like snacks and soda for the block party. Click here for more information on how to help.
