MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Haven't booked your campsite for Memorial Day weekend yet? Don't worry, hundreds of previously unreservable sites at Minnesota state parks will become reservable next week.

Starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, these additional campsites will be made available in three phases.

On May 3, state parks in southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro area will be reservable.

You can start reserving sites at state parks in central and northwestern Minnesota beginning on May 4.

The final batch of sites, located in state parks in northeastern Minnesota, will be available on May 5.

In previous years, 25 to 30 percent of the total sites at each campground were 'first-come, first-served' sites, meaning campers could just show up without a reservation hoping to get a site.

About 20 percent of Minnesota's state parks piloted the new all-reservable system in 2014 and 2015. Based on the success of that pilot program, the DNR decided to expand the service to all Minnesota state park campgrounds.
