Minnesotans Head Outdoors On Record-Setting #Top10WxDay

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's a #Top10WxDay in Minnesota, and that means parks and patios were full of people enjoying the record-setting heat.

The record warmth isn't only bringing people out to enjoy the patios, it's also that time of year people are starting to plant flowers. We talked to the owner of Sunnyside Gardens who says business is picking up.

Ahead of Mother's Day Weekend, people were out shopping around for their favorite flowers. Mike Hurley, the owner of Sunnyside Gardens in south Minneapolis, says this year is different than years past.

"This is pretty rare where it starts early and there's no interruptions with cold nights or rainy days," he said.

Not too far away on the City's east side, Minnesotans were appreciating the May warmth. Surly Brewing Company takes pride in their outdoor patio. No matter how busy it is there is always a spot to relax and enjoy a cold brew.

At Lake Harriet in south Minneapolis, sailors are getting ready to hit the water, like Nancy Grist and her Victoria 18.

"This boat was built in 1979, and this is the world's most perfect boat for this lake, for the size of this lake, and the wind conditions," she said.

Grist said Friday's wind conditions are perfect.

"It has to do with the size of the lake and the shape of the shoreline," she said. "The fetch of the lake is longer north to south, so if we get anything from the south southeast southwest, it's wonderful."

And once she's out on the water, it's like a whole different world.

"When you get out there on the lake -- and it takes me five minutes to get down there and 20 minutes to rig -- all of the sudden when you get out there, you feel like you're out of town," Grist said.

And she's not alone.

"You have a new community of sailors who help each other and have a lot of fun together," she said. "We're a team effort, so somebody will show up with their boat and ask for assistance, they'll help me and I'll help them."
