Officials: Aircraft & Drone Intrusions Over MN Wildfires Are Dangerous

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota officials are issuing a reminder during wildfire season: don't intrude into airspace over wildfires with private aircraft or drones.

According to the Minnesota Incident Command System (MNICS), there have been at least two intrusions over the last few days – one by private airplane and the second by an unmanned aircraft system, also known as a drone.

"Wildfires are serious business. Many people would like to get a closer look at fires or take photos of wildfires. But, those activities are restricted, and that includes the airspace above and around wildfires. Intrusions into this airspace can be dangerous."

The MNICS says state wildfire agencies use aircraft to detect and suppress wildfires. If an unauthorized aircraft or drone is spotted over fires, aerial firefighting operations must immediately be stopped.

Anyone operating unauthorized planes or drones over fires is subject to a variety of penalties, including suspension of pilot certificate and fines.
