St. Paul Teen Recovering After Being Hit By Bus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Classmates of a St. Paul teenager say he is getting better after a school bus hit him last week.

Isaac Schneider, 15, was in critical condition last Thursday after he was struck in a crosswalk at Maryland Avenue and Dale Street. He was on his way to Como Park Senior High School just after 7 a.m.

A few things are different about the robotics team at Como this school year. They have qualified for the state high school league's championship for robotics for the first time.

But they are doing it while one of their teammates is hospitalized with serious injuries.

Mike Fischer is one of the team's coaches.

"It's just been so hard," Mike said. "I haven't really been able to process it, and I know the day it happened I couldn't teach."

Isaac's coaches and teammates find it hard to talk about the crash that left him bloodied and wounded after a school bus struck him last week.

"It was just really horrible, I mean, such a tragedy for such a person," teammate Marie Wulff said. "No one deserves to be hit by a bus, especially not Isaac. I know our whole team is pretty devastated."

The robotics team posted an update on Isaac's condition on Twitter Saturday, saying, "Went through surgery today, which was successful. Things are looking better for him."

"Isaac is a super-friendly guy. He's probably one of the nicest people on the team that I met," Marie said. "He contributes a lot to team spirit."

He also did marketing work for the team, and helped recruit new members. Max Narvaez is another junior on the team.

"One thing he did a lot was provide the snacks, and remember the time to give them to us [laughs]!" Max said.

The team plans to make posters to cheer Isaac up. Theo Axtell-Adams is also an 11th grader on the team.

"We are all going to be representing him at state and hopefully we'll do well," Theo said.

The principal and teachers at Como High say the family has asked for privacy, so WCCO does not have a detailed update on Isaac's condition.

Students are looking for ways to raise money for the family to help with his medical expenses. St. Paul Police told WCCO they are still investigating the crash and waiting for the bus driver's blood test results.
