Prince's Sister: Family-Authorized Memorial Happening In August

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, says her family is planning to have an official, family-authorized celebration of the artist's life in August.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Nelson said that since her brother's death last month there has not been an official funeral. She said that while she supports tributes and celebrations of Prince's life, none have had the official blessing of the musician's relatives or Paisley Park representatives.

She added that Prince's ashes have not been present at any recent memorials.

On Sunday, a memorial was slated to happen at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Minnetonka. There, those who worshiped alongside Prince will honor him. Hundreds are expected to attend, including prominent guests. Prince's relatives won't be among them.

Earlier this month, a private industry memorial for Prince was held at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.

Nelson said details of the August event will be released soon.

Prince died on April 21 in his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen. He was 57.
