Vikings Legend Bud Grant's Garage Sale Returns

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The most popular garage sale in town is back for another season.

"It's like before a game, before a garage sale," former Vikings coach Bud Grant said.

Grant, who turns 89 on Friday, opened up his Bloomington home Wednesday to hundreds of fans for his annual yard sale. Grant coached the Vikings to four Super Bowls and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Vikings fan Ron Rogers drove up all the way from Dallas, Texas.

"To have a chance to meet Bud Grant it's just a lifelong dream," Rogers said.

Grant retired as a Vikings coach 31 years ago. For the last 12 years, he's been selling some of his most prized memorabilia every Spring. Everything from $6 t-shirts, to collections of old fan mail from kids selling for $300.

"If you think it's too much, don't buy it," Grant laughed.

But not everything's purple and gold. It's a yard sale, after all; Grant has hunting gear, kayaks, and knick-knacks to sell.

"This is a clock for the cabin," one buyer said. "Everything my wife doesn't like goes to the cabin."

For most of the buyers, they go for something you can't buy: a chance to meet a Minnesota great.

"It's something the kids enjoy," Grant said. "Football is great entertainment for people [but] it's not life or death, remember that."

The sale runs Thursday from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. – noon. Cash or check only, at 8134 Oakmere Road in Bloomington.
