Minnesotans Head Outside On Sunny Memorial Day Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The tides have turned and this Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be quite nice.

After a day of cloudy skies and rain showers Saturday, the sun came out Sunday and so did the people.

Four of the past five Memorial Days were rainy, but things are looking up this year.

There are more than 10,000 scenes like this in Minnesota Sunday. Scenes that aren't assumed this time of year -- but they are appreciated.

"My kids are going to be outside the majority of the day," said one woman.

"It's good to be outside in it, let the breeze refresh you," said Rector Lee Domenick.

After Lake Harriet's outdoor services kicked off, Domenick blessed the two-wheeled symbols of summer.

"Start off this morning, it was all cloudy, I'm thinking, 'Give me two hours, please. Just give me a couple of hours,' and God did. God was very gracious," said Domenick.

Gratefulness was all around at a Richfield mini-golf course.

"It's a very bright, very warm. I'd say the weather is perfect for playing mini-golf," said one boy.

Brothers Charlie Ernest and Jim Maciasek seem to agree.

"It's nice," said Ernest.

"Yesterday pretty much rained out, but today pretty nice and tomorrow even better, so at least it'll end on a good note," Maciasek said.

While optimism was in the air, so was something else.

"I don't like when it's windy with all this cotton. I got allergies," said one man.

But he powered through, just like a group of girls swimming at Powderhorn Park did.

"It feels cold," said one girl.

Because when a May day in Minnesota looks like it did Sunday, you make it count.
