Mpls. Man Sentenced For Kidnapping 4-Year-Old Boy

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis man was sentenced Thursday for kidnapping a preschooler and taking him on a frightening police chase last year.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says Xavier Kent Fritz-Smead received 108 months stay of execution, 365 days in the county workhouse and 10 years of probation.

The criminal complaint says Fritz-Smead went to the home of the boy's mother, a longtime friend, on March 10, 2015 to apologize for acting violently towards her two days earlier.

But soon after arriving at the south Minneapolis home, he grabbed the boy and drove away with him.

Police spotted his car soon after on the shoulder of Interstate 494 and a chase followed, which ended minutes later when Fritz-Smead's car got stuck in muddy ravine.

Officers said Fritz-Smead had the boy in headlock, and his face had turned a deep red before they were able to rescue him from his kidnapper's arms.

Fritz-Smead also chipped an officer's tooth during the struggle, and spit on another officer. The struggle ended only after he was sedated by paramedics.

He reports to the workhouse on June 16.
