Wander Minnesota: What's Up for Father's Day

Mom had her turn last month, now dad is up for honors. Here are some ideas for family fun on Father's Day.

Get an early and active start with the Father's Day 5K around Arbor Lake in Maple Grove. Participants can enjoy a free breakfast—and beer—at Claddagh Irish Pub. Don't forget to pre-register.

Or there's a weekend-long event that has numerous family components: the Stone Arch Bridge Festival. There's the Art of the Car Show, soccer games and drills with Minnesota FC United, ATV helmet design with Polaris, live music, and plenty of food. Also, beer.

Three Rivers Parks offers Family Archery classes at several locations, including Elm Creek Park Reserve and Carver Park Reserve. Skilled instructors will teach the basics of shooting and safety. Reservations required at least 2 days prior.

Father's Day happens to fall on Target 3rd Free Sundays at the St. Paul location of the Minnesota Children's Museum. Note that this is not only a great deal, it's also very popular, and to keep it safe, the museum limits how many people are allowed in at a time. The earlier you go, the better.

At the state fairgrounds, it's Back to the 50s weekend, an enormous classic car event that not only draws hundreds of classic cars, but also live entertainment and a Kid's World area and tractor pull on Saturday.

Or you can check out an old-fashioned approach to Father's Day at the Father's Day Weekend events at the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River. Dads get free admission when accompanied by a child. Learn about farm chores from yesteryear

The Harkin Store outside of New Ulm offers dads a chance to relax while learning about the store's history and hearing from leather artist Dan Cochran.

For even more relaxation, sign dad up for the Father's Day Champagne Brunch Cruise, a two-hour tour of the St. Croix River with full brunch. Reservations recommended.

Or go to a more casual event: the Father's Day All You Can Eat BBQ Picnic at Surly Brewing. Given the quality of the food at Surly, this is likely to be better than your average all-you-can-eat event.
