Twins Place Phil Hughes, Trevor May On DL
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have placed right-handed relievers Phil Hughes and Trevor May on the 15-day disabled list.
The moves were made Friday before the game against Boston. Hughes, recently demoted to the bullpen, has a bruised left knee. He was hit with a line drive Thursday against Miami.
"We're hoping there's no major injury that would set him back for a long time," said Twins manager Paul Molitor, who added that Minnesota was waiting for the results from Hughes' MRI.
Hughes began the year in the rotation but was demoted to the bullpen after going 1-7 with a 5.97 ERA in 11 starts. Thursday's injury was the latest disappointment for Hughes this season.
"I know he's disheartened," Molitor said. "He said something last night when he got in, he said, 'Par for the course' or something along those lines. When it rains, it pours."
May has lower-back spasms that have limited his availability this month. He gave up three hits and three runs without recording an out Thursday against the Marlins.
Right-hander Kyle Gibson returned from his rehab assignment and was reinstated from the disabled list. He will start Saturday against the Red Sox. A strained shoulder and a stiff back have kept him out since April 22.
Right-hander J.T. Chargois was recalled from Triple-A Rochester for his first stint in the majors. Chargois is one of several hard-throwing relievers the Twins have drafted in recent years, and one of the first of that group to reach the big leagues.
Chargois had a 0.73 ERA with 20 strikeouts and four walks in 11 relief appearances with Rochester.
"He's put together a solid first couple of months," Molitor said. "Whether it's the leading edge or not, we'll still have to see."
