Minnesota Muslim Community Condemns Orlando Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Muslim community has condemned the actions of the shooter who killed 50 people at an Orlando nightclub.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old American citizen from Florida, according to the Associated Press. The AP also reports the shooter called 911 and referenced ISIS before the attack.

"Minnesota Muslims condemn in the strongest possible terms the mass shooting in Orlando," said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

In the statement, CAIR Minnesota said "the LGTBQ community has stood side by side with the American Muslim community during challenging and difficult times. We stand together against hatred, violence and demonization of entire communities."

On Monday, leaders from the LGBTQ and Muslim communities will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. in response to the shooting.
