Clinton, Trump React To Orlando Mass Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Presidential candidates have offered their reaction to the mass shooting in Orlando.

Authorities say 50 people were killed and 53 others were hurt when a gunman opened fire at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla., early Sunday morning.

Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, had this reaction on Twitter to the Orlando shootings.

"Woke up to hear the devastating news from FL. As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with those affected by this horrific act," Clinton said.

Donald Trump took credit on his Twitter feed for his stand on terrorism, saying "Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!"

Political analysts Larry Jacobs says the tragedy in Orlando could boost Trump's candidacy

"If the early news reports that this might be a domestic terror case, if that is proven to be the case, then I think is going to play very strongly into Donald Trump's hand. He has been pushing hard that we need to be tougher on terrorists," Jacobs said.

Early Sunday morning, police in Florida did call the massacre an act of domestic terrorism and said the shooter, Omar Mateem, was believed to be a supporter of radical Islamic groups.
