Stories Of Survival And Loss Emerge In Orlando Massacre

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Forty-nine people died Sunday morning at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. The gay club was hosting a Latin dance party and was about to close when gunfire erupted.

In addition to those killed, more than 50 were hurt. All of the injured are expected to survive.

The heartbreaking reality is setting in for many survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting. This was no nightmare.

"I wish I could've saved more, to be honest. There's a lot of people that are dead. There's a lot of people that are dead," 24-year-old bouncer Imran Yousef said.

Yousef is also a Hindu U.S. Marine who served in Afghanistan. His actions led 60 to 70 people to safety early Sunday morning.

One victim who didn't make it, 25-year-old nursing student Amanda Alvear, chronicled her last moments on the social media app Snapchat.

Josh McGill escaped gunfire and helped Rodney Sumter, Jr. -- bleeding from three gunshot wounds -- get to the hospital.

"So the police officer turned to me and said, 'OK, this is what the deal is. You're going to lay down in the back of that cop car and then he's going to lay on top of you, and I want you to bear hug him and try to keep all the pressure on him as you can,'" McGill said.

With victims' families learning the fate of their loved ones by the minute, investigators continue covering every inch of the crime scene -- from the bathroom where they say Omar Mateen held people hostage for three hours, to the back wall officers punched through, eventually taking Mateen down in a a shootout.

Investigators are also focusing on Mateen's Florida home where they've confiscated a computer and some other electronics.

Mateen was born in New York to Afghan parents. His father spoke Monday condemning his son's actions.

Seddique Mateen said he had no idea what his son was planning. But a message posted on Facebook Monday morning also makes it clear he could have passed anti-homosexual views onto his son.
