Camp Looks To Get Kids Sailing Through Summer

DEEPHAVEN, Minn. (WCCO) – School's out for summer and that could mean some parents are looking to get their kids out of the house.

The Lake Minnetonka Sailing School has programs all summer long, and you don't have to have any experience to try.

I was an instructor at the school years ago, but when I worked there, they didn't have the summer camp program.

Today, the summer camp program works in partnership with the YMCA. As such, it's affordable and tailored for beginners.

"I steer a lot, and it's fun," said Lucia Loosbrock, a student at the camp. "It's just like the most enjoyable thing to do, you just glide across the water, it's really fun."

Loosbrock, 13, started sailing when she was 6 years old. The different programs offered through LMSS are open to ages 6 to 16. From beginners to racers, there's something for everyone.

"Through the YMCA, it's really great, we're able to touch on and get some interaction from youth sailors in inner-city programs, which is great, at a very affordable cost," said Jessica Haverstock, who runs the school.

She grew up learning how to sail at Light House Island through the school.

"Now being here as the director, it's just such a treat and such a great opportunity getting to see these guys progress," Haverstock said.

Haverstock admits sailing might be intimidating to someone who hasn't done it before, but there's no need to feel intimidated or apprehensive.

"Once you learn the basics, it's pretty easy to feel comfortable in the boat, get out sailing and be very confident out the water," she said.

Plus they have a brand new fleet of Hartley 12s for the program.

"And the new boats are tailored for less experienced sailors looking to learn the fundamentals," Haverstock said. "The hull is flatter, making the boat more stable and the sailors are actually smaller, which slows things down a bit."

The week long, full-day camps run through July and August. The price tag is $325, and there are some spots still open.
