N.D. Couple Must Give 64 Dogs To Shelter

KATHRYN, N.D. (AP) — A Kathryn couple facing animal neglect charges has been ordered to give up to an animal shelter the 64 dogs that were seized from their property.

KQDJ radio reports that Prairie Paws Rescue in Jamestown has been given custody and control of the dogs. The animal shelter has also been given permission to make placement determinations.

The dogs were rescued from filthy conditions in June. Court documents show that Karl and Ginger Helland both face a misdemeanor animal neglect charge that carries a maximum sentence of a year in jail.

Court records show Karl Helland is scheduled to appear in court July 19. Ginger Helland's June 28 hearing at the Barnes County courthouse was cancelled.

Court records for both defendants do not list attorneys who could comment on their behalf.
