Driver ID'd In Crash That Killed 8-Year-Old Girl

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities in Albert Lea have identified the 70-year-old man who struck and killed an 8-year-old girl on her bicycle last Saturday.

The Albert Lea Police said Stephen Laverne Kaasa, of Albert Lea, was the driver of a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer that hit Sophie Stultz.

According to police, Kaasa was driving southbound on Frank Hall Drive, approaching 8th Street where Stultz was riding. Stultz, who was riding eastbound, failed to yield as Kaasa approached and passed in front of his car. Kaasa then struck Stultz.

Police said the intersection is uncontrolled, but that the SUV had the right of way.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for the Stultz family.
