Family Mourning Child Killed In North Minneapolis Gunfire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The family of a 2-year-old boy who was shot and killed in north Minneapolis wants the world to know he had many people who cared about him.

After their weekly church service, four generations of Le'Vonte Jones' family gathered to ask the public to come forward with any tips to help find his killer. Minneapolis police say the shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Lowry and Penn Avenues North.

Surveillance video shows the minivan the boy was riding in and an exchange of gunfire between the minivan and the car at a stoplight. The family says they don't know why the other car started shooting and it is time for community members who saw something to say something.

"Think how you would feel if this was your family up here and step forward and help us solve this crime and step forward because this doesn't make any sense, there's too much hurting out here," Regena Jones, the victim's aunt, said.

The child's 15-month-old sister was also hurt in the shooting but is out of the hospital.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Sunday Jones died of a gunshot wound to the chest. His death has been ruled a homicide.
