Ellison, A Vocal Sanders Supporter, Endorses Clinton

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Rep. Keith Ellison announced Wednesday that he is endorsing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee: Hillary Clinton.

In a blog post on the Huffington Post, the congressman wrote that although he was an early supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, he is now backing Clinton, who is gearing up to face Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, in the fall.

"Clinton is the most qualified nominee in history and there is no question that she stands firmly for progressive values," Ellison wrote.

On Tuesday, Sanders, who was an unlikely but formidable opponent against Clinton during the Democratic primaries, tepidly endorsed the former Secretary of State.

In March, Sanders won Minnesota's Democratic caucus. He was backed here by Ellison, one of his most vocal backers in Congress.

As eyes turn towards November, Ellison says Sanders' dream still lives on.

"Bernie said many times our movement was never about him," Ellison wrote. "It was about tackling income inequality, getting big money out of politics, and ending crippling student debt."
