2016 Has Now Seen 200 Fatalities On Minnesota Roads

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Public safety officials say that over the weekend Minnesota saw its 200th road fatality of 2016.

The state hit the grim mark on Saturday, when two people died in northwestern Minnesota after their car went through a stop sign and was broadsided by a van.

The Department of Public Safety says that crashes -- such as the one on Saturday, where the victims weren't wearing seat belts – are often preventable.

Most road fatalities, officials say, are the result of speeding, distracted driving, drunk driving, or not wearing seat belts.

Last year, Minnesota hit the 201 fatalities mark on July 20.
