Memories of '91 Return At Twins, Braves Matchup

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It was one of the greatest World Series ever played, if not the greatest.

It was truly something special when the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves met 25 years ago.

But it was not quite the same during an inter-league rematch at Target Field Tuesday night.

While the memories of the 1991 series live on for both teams, the Twins and Braves are far removed from that memorable season -- but both still have plenty in common.

They are currently last in their respective divisions and last in their respective leagues.

"It's a battle of the worst, I guess," said Braves fan Mike Lillo.

But fans still turned out on a beautiful July night to watch and reminisce over '91.

"I think it was Puckett's [walk-off] home run [in Game 6]. That was my favorite highlight," said Twins fan Dale Kain.

For Twins fan Matt Niedzielski, it was when Jack Morris went the distance in Game 7.

"That was pretty special," Niedzielski said.

There is a silver lining in all of this. Prior to that legendary World Series, both the Twins and Braves finished last the season before.

Each team then went from worst to first in 1991. The true baseball optimist will say, maybe just maybe, that can happen again.

"I'll keep my season tickets," said Twins fan Mike Scipioni. "I think next year they are back in it. At least, hopefully they will be .500."

Both teams have had success since. The Braves won a World Series in 1995, and the Twins won their share of division titles in the 2000s.

The teams will play each other again later in August in Atlanta.
