Ready To Start Your School Shopping? Expert Says It's Time

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Believe it or not, it's already less than a month before some kids start heading back to school.

That means it's time to stock up on supplies.

"Now they're required to buy more things for school," Danielle Tardino, a mother of four, said. "They're more particular about stuff."

The National Retail Federation says on average, families will spend $673.57 on back to school apparel and school supplies this year. That's up from $630.36 last year, a 9.6 percent increase.

The NRF says it's not just a longer list of supplies increasing costs, but increased confidence in the economy. In exchange, retailers are offering deals in stores and online to help families who are on a budget for backpacks and books.

"I thought in the next two weeks I can bring my receipt back to Target and get it adjusted if I need to," Jessica Kaufman said.

Families say clothing is the most expensive back-to-school item, while actual school supplies are the least expensive on the list.

Not only are families buying more in school supplies, they are also shopping earlier.  The National Retail Federation says this year, 73 percent will begin their shopping one to two months before school starts. That's up from 62 percent from last year.

"I'm ready for it," Kaufman, a stay-at-home mom, said. "They love school so it makes it a lot easier."
