Falcon Heights Residents Urge City To End St. Anthony PD Contract

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. (AP) -- A listening session in Falcon Heights overflowed with citizens concerned about the recent killing of a black man by an officer.

Some told stories of racial profiling and urged that Falcon Heights end its contract with the police department in nearby St. Anthony. Philando Castile was shot July 6 by St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez after a traffic stop.

Some also called for a change in the way the town is policed, asking for more foot patrols and citizen engagement. Others said the impromptu memorial that sprung up at the site of Castile's shooting should stay up during the Minnesota State Fair.

Attendees included Castile's mother, Valerie Castile, and other family members. Valerie said someone has to "step up and hold people accountable for their behavior."
