Mayo Clinic Earns Top Spot On National Hospital List

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Mayo Clinic is being lauded as the top hospital in the nation.

The U.S. News and World Report released this week an overview of the nation's best hospitals of 2016 and the Rochester hospital topped the honor roll list, which is made up of 20 acclaimed health care centers across the nation.

"These endorsements reinforce our century-old commitment to provide the highest quality care to each patient every day," said Dr. John H. Noseworthy, the president and CEO of the Mayo Clinic, in a statement. "Although no single set of measures can perfectly represent health care quality, we are proud to be recognized."

The Mayo Clinic earned high marks for being the best in the nation in eight of 16 specialty areas that U.S. News and World Report uses in its annual evaluation of 5,000 American hospitals.

The specialty areas the Mayo Clinic excels at are:

- diabetes and endocrinology
- gastroenterology and GI surgery
- geriatrics
- gynecology
- nephrology
- neurology and neurosurgery
- pulmonology
- urology

The Mayo Clinic serves over 1 million people a year, and has major campuses in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.

Last year, the Mayo Clinic came in second to Massachusetts General Hospital on U.S. News and World Report honor roll ranking. This year, Massachusetts General fell to third.
