Hoverboard Suspected In Spicer House Fire

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Authorities are warning about the possible fire danger of hoverboards after a house fire last month in west-central Minnesota.

After a preliminary investigation, authorities suspect a hoverboard that was being charged caused a house fire in Spicer that injured a woman and killed four dogs.

The State Fire Marshal's office is asking hoverboard owners to read operating and charging instructions, and to check if their board is among more than 500,000 hoverboards that are being recalled.

The recall was issued after some of the motorized scooters overheated, burned riders and damaged property.

Authorities say hoverboards not on the recall list can still be dangerous. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's office say hoverboards with lithium ion battery packs pose a risk of smoking, catching fire or exploding.
