Minneapolis City Leaders Make Plea To Fund Orange Line
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There's a push for funding for another rapid transit bus line linking the south metro to Minneapolis.
Dozens of people gathered on Lake Street in Minneapolis next to Interstate 35W to show support for the Orange Line, which would connect Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis. Specifically, it would improve the Lake Street station, which many say needs a lot of improvement.
"It would turn this awful travesty of a staircase, dangerous to all who tried to approach it, into a transit center that is of service to everyone and accessible," Minneapolis council member Elizabeth Glidden said.
Glidden says the county's transit improvement board still has vote on whether or not to approve $45 million for the project. If the board doesn't vote, it could put the whole project in jeopardy.
Federal funding for the Orange Line is dependent on the local county's approval first. The project is facing a Sept. 2 deadline to have its local funding in order.
