Crackdown On MnPASS Violations Begins Wednesday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new team of Minnesota State Troopers is on the lookout specifically to see if anyone is using MnPASS lanes illegally.

The troopers will be on Interstates 394, 35W and 35E beginning Wednesday.

To legally drive in HOV lanes, those inside lanes that often have less traffic, during peak-travel times you need at least one passenger with you. Or, alternately, you need a MnPASS tag on your windshield that allows you to pay an electronic fee to be in the lane.

The amount you pay depends on how heavy traffic is at the time. The average peak period fee is between $1 and $4. The maximum toll is $8.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the State Patrol say the goal of having more troopers out is to reduce the number of motorists driving in the lanes illegally, and to improve safety and free flowing traffic conditions.

Travelers are advised to be aware that the MnPASS express lanes are separated by double-white lines. It is illegal to cross them at any time. You could be fined 142 dollars if you cross them.

The new team of troopers will be out mornings and afternoons for at least the next two years.
