Lynx Return Home After Winning Gold In Rio
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Lynx have won three WNBA titles and now some of their players can add a gold medal to their resume.
Four of the 12 players that made up the USA women's basketball team in Rio were Lynx players.
Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Lindsey Whalen and Sylvia Fowles each took home a gold medal.
And Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was an assistant for the U.S. team.
"To be here a third time and actually have three other teammates here with me says a lot about the organization that we have here, a lot about where we've come from and where we are at right now," said Augustus.
Where they are right now is counting more hardware. Between them, Augustus, Fowles, Moore and Whalen have won 10 gold medals, but also 10 WNBA championships.
"I thought we all had a really great impact on the team and obviously coach [Reeve] as well and the staff. I thought we all represented the Lynx and Minnesota really well," said Whalen.
"It really was like an All-Star video game being put together when you look around and you're like, 'Wow, I'm playing with some of the greatest that will play the games,'" said Moore.
And Moore may be right at the top of that list. She's won NCAA championships to go with her WNBA titles and Olympic gold. She said the homecoming the fans gave her and her teammates Monday night has already got them thinking about bringing home a fourth WNBA title in six years.
"There are so many people that probably wish they could be here but for the ones that did come, it makes this moment more memorable. We want to continue it on. That's the good news is we still have some season left," said Moore.
After just over a month off from the WNBA season, the Lynx will travel to Connecticut and play the Connecticut Sun on Friday.
To give you a perspective on the U.S. women's basketball team, this was their sixth consecutive gold medal.
They have a 49 game winning streak dating back to 1992.
