Dental Therapy On The Rise In Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Dental therapy is on the rise across Minnesota as the state's underserved populations seek more affordable care.

Dr. Karl Self, the director of the University of Minnesota's dental therapy program, says dental therapists provide a limited set of care that can meet the basic dental needs of many people.

Self says dental therapists can clean teeth and fill cavities. They do not do reconstructive or orthodontic care.

Minnesota became the first state to recognize dental therapists in 2009.
