Group Sues School District Over Transgender Bathroom Policy

VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) — A school district in northeastern Minnesota is facing a lawsuit over its transgender restroom and locker room policy.

Attorneys for a group of parents and students filed the federal lawsuit against Virginia Public Schools, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice over a federal rule that says transgender students in public schools must be allowed to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity.

Virginia parents and students formed the group Privacy Matters to challenge the school district's policy. One of the group's attorneys, Gary McCaleb from the nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom, says no child should be forced into an intimate setting such as a locker room with someone of the opposite sex.

The plaintiffs have asked for a permanent injunction against the district's policy and the federal rule.
