More Than 3,000 Households Hosted Airbnb Guests During Ryder Cup

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – More than 3,000 households in the Twin Cities hosted guests for the Ryder Cup, according to numbers put out by the home sharing platform Airbnb.

The data, which was released on Tuesday, shows that Hennepin County had the highest number of guests hosted. During the week of the tournament, the county saw 2,437 people renting their homes to guests – a 144 percent increase of Airbnb activity over a typical week.

The other counties that saw a boost in people using the home sharing service were Ramsey (508 guests), Carver (432 guests) and Scott (67 guests).

In total, 3,444 guests were hosted over the course of the Ryder Cup.

The prestigious U.S.-vs.-Europe tournament was held in Chaska, at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Airbnb says that 215 people stayed in the south metro suburb the week of the tournament – a 1,265 percent increase over a typical week for the city.

Some homeowners with houses overlooking the golf course were able to rent their homes out for the week to the tune of $1,000 a night.

It's not clear, however, if these homeowners used Airbnb to cash in on the Ryder Cup tourism bump.
