Gopher Hockey Opens Season With Sweep Of Anchorage

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota men's hockey team beat Alaska-Anchorage 6-3 Sunday night to a complete a weekend sweep in its opening series.

The Gophers beat Anchorage 6-0 Friday night as Eric Schierhorn got the shutout in net. Schierhorn, an Anchorage native, also got an assist in Sunday's win. The Gophers had 13 different players tally points Sunday night.

Minnesota scored two short-handed goals in the win, from Tyler Sheehy and Justin Kloos. Brent Gates Jr., Vinni Lettieri and Kloos each scored goals in the second period. Ryan Zuhlsdorf and Sheehy added third period goals to solidify the victory.

The Gophers out-shot the Nanooks 27-20 in the win. Minnesota hosts St. Cloud State in its official home opener on Oct. 21. The Gophers host the U.S. Under-18 team on Friday.
