Albert Lea Pursuit Plows Through Bean, Alfalfa, Corn Fields

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A police pursuit that began in Albert Lea ended after the suspect drove through bean, alfalfa and corn fields nearby.

According to police, the chase began at about 10 p.m. Monday. An officer tried to stop a truck that was seen driving through downtown Albert Lea with its headlights off.

The truck sped away, reaching West Main Street and driving at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The truck reportedly opened up and reached 105 miles per hour once it was on County Road 46.

Police said the truck slowed down and turned into a harvested bean field. The driver continued through an alfalfa field and also a plowed corn field, eventually getting stuck in the woods along Lake Chapeau.

Two people fled from the truck but were apprehended. The driver was identified as 19-year-old Sam Thompson, of Austin. Police say he was driving after having his license suspended.

The passenger was 21-year-old Joseph Waltz Jr., of Albert Lea.
